5 destinations for sightseers and tourists in Greece
For many years , Greece’s capital has been left out from the list of European capitals worth checking, but now that people can do their own research through the Internet and see what they’re missing on, it has become more and more popular on the travel market. While some people might not agree, Greece (interesting to know is that the Danish term is Grækenland) has much to offer, both culturally and for leisure activities. Being in a subtropical climate it is perfect for beach resorts and activities, and still there are many things to see if you’re interested in history, especially ancient history concerning one of the most developed civilizations of the ancient era.
Here’s a list of some things to enjoy while you’re in Greece. I’d like to mention that this list is not even close to all the things you can find while exploring this wonderful country :
- The Acropolis – the definite leader of all the destinations, the Acropolis, or “upper city” is a place near a rocky hill where Athens was once founded. There lies the building of the Parthenon, which you’ve probably seen on many pictures, but you won’t be able to feel its beauty unless you see it with your own eyes. It’s best to go early in the morning to beat the crowds and the heat during the summer
- The National Archaeological Museum – the museum features unique artifacts and items that represent ancient Greek culture from over the centuries. It holds many interesting things to see which give you a clue about the lifestyle of the many islands and polis (cities) of Greece over the centuries
- Monastiraki street market – since Athens is a city of many different cultures ,you’ll find this market quite surprisingly closer to the culture of the orient than that of Greece. Still it’s an interesting place to see, since the different traders can sell you pretty much everything – from a bouzouki (a Greek string instrument ,similar to a guitar) to a used computer
- Lykavittos Hill – this is a must see place , since it offers amazing views of the city. Take a hike to the hill and use the opportunity to take pictures of the city from the top
- Nightlife – you can’t say you’ve visited
